Beethoven
Published in Paperback by Littlefield Adams (June, 1977)
Author: Marion M. Scott
Average review score:

A Classic
The original Beethoven study in this series dates back to 1899. However in 1934, Dent Music Masters replaced that early volume with an entirely new study by Marion M. Scott. This particular edition enjoyed great popularity and was reprinted nine times between 1934 and 1974. Scott (1877-1953), an English music critic, musicologist, violinist and composer, untook a completely new study of Beethoven's life and work. Her insightful comments on his music are based on her own interpretations and careful study of each score. She visited Beethoven's birthplace and immersed herself in his world. The result is an extraordinary classic study of the man and his music. Scott was a metaphysician who probed deeply into the spirital aspects of Beethoven's music and created a text that is both stimulating and profound. "Beethoven's last quartets are not the justification of modern music," Scott observes, "but modern music has reached the point at which it justifies the quartets and proves Beethoven's genius to have been transcendental." Highly recommended.

Concise, well-organized bio of the composer
This text refers to the 1899 ORIGINAL edition. A superb book on Beethoven and a neglected classic. Small in scope and a "brisk" read, it nonetheless delves into his life and work with hardly a wasted word. Short but very insightful discussions of the character and occasional shortcomings in his compositions, with very level-headed and perceptive opinions (and a more positive reception of the composer's Late Period than I would have thought from a work of that time). The discussion is not watered down, but never gets over the head of the average listener. It was clearly meant for the educated non-specialist of the time, though how such a person could have been familiar with the wide range of music discussed before the advent of the phonograph and radio is an interesting question.

Excellent appendices on his works and milestones in his life. In short, one of the better books on the master....but beware, if you're looking for juicy digressions on the identity of the "Immortal Beloved" or the psychological reasons behind Beethoven's relationship with the aristocracy, the author doesn't indulge a great deal in such speculation. This is a biography that just sticks to the facts. As such it's one of the very best "overview" books I've ever seen on the subject.

A neglected classic on Beethoven
This text refers to the 1899 ORIGINAL edition. A superb book on Beethoven and a neglected classic. Small in scope and a "brisk" read, it nonetheless penetrates into his life and work with hardly a wasted word. Short but very insightful discussions of the character and occasional shortcomings in his compositions, with opinions that I feel were advanced for their time. Some examples in musical notation, but the non-scholar or non-musician need not fear--it never gets too complex. Excellent appendices on his works and milestones in his life. Allergy Free Living
I work as an Allergy Technician in a very busy ENT/Allergy Practice in Sonora, Calif., and find this book extremely helpful in showing my patients what they are exposed to, and also what not to plant for their own well being. This book is the best that I have ever seen for educating my patients. I understand that Scott Seargeant is working on a updated version and also a book strictly on indoor allergens. I have talked directly with this gentleman and found him to be very knowledgeble and personable. I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers allergies or knows anyone that does.
Steve Haskill LVN II/Allergy Tech

Review from North Alabama
This is a great book. It tells you which plants and trees are allergy-free and which ones are allergy producing. I take it with me to the garden shops when I go to buy plants and trees.

Excellent compilation of information I haven't found before
As a new seasonal allergy sufferer, I am interested in finding ways to reduce my symptoms while still being able to spend time outdoors in the garden. This book has shown me the variety of plants growing in my yard that produce high amounts of problem-causing pollens. The book contains chapters on Allergies, Medical Conditions Triggered by Allergies, Inhalant Allergens, Reducing the Allergy Triggers (including strategies for landscaping and re-landscaping), Allergy-Free Plants and Low Pollen Producers (with photographs), Allergy Producing Plants (with photos) and U. S. plant allergy maps for travelers, Photo Illustrations of Landscapes, Replacing Allergy Producing with Allergy-Free Plants (including suggestions for substituting specific allergy producing plants with allergy-free plants that have a similar look and landscape use), and several useful indices and supplements. I highly recommend it to anyone who gardens and anyone who has allergies.

LIFE -Outstanding,stimulating, and envigorating
"Borrowed Dreams" is a multi- faceted look at a broad range of life written by a true man and true pilot who is envigorated on a daily basis by the many possibilities and excitement of life on the edge!. A must read! It truly makes one reflect on the quality and depth of their own life experience in a very positive way.

Excellent read - entertaining and enlightning
Great first person tales as the author personally works side by side with people in unusual jobs. A behind the scenes look at some very interesting occupations. Real people, real lives, and great writing. The author does a fine job of presenting the concerns, cares, problems and triumphs of ordinary people who are working unusual and demanding jobs. The comparison of what you do, versus what these people do and how they approach things, is thought provoking on many levels. Great book...

The Business Traveling Parent: How to Stay Close to Your Kids When You're Far Away
Published in Paperback by Robins Lane Press (December, 2000)
Authors: Dan Verdick and Scott Pollack
Average review score:

Don't Leave Home Without It!!
This is a terrific book. The author gives some great ideas on things to do before you leave, when you are gone and when you get home again. The ideas are simple and fun for the kids. If you can't be at home as often as you'd like, then The Business Traveling Parent really offers some simple solutions to staying close to your kids. This is also a great gift for any busy executive, salesperson, or anyone who travels more than they would like to.

While You're Away
I really like the concept of parents staying in touch with kids when they have to travel. One idea from the book that I like is to take pictures to show or send to the child so they can see what it's like where you are. Better than postcards, and sweet, not necessarily a new idea, but a great reminder. Sending secret emails and faxes sounds fun too.Cooking together on the night you return and making something special from the place/country you've been is excellent. Such nice ideas, and not too much to handle for the traveler. These are lucky kids whose parents do these things with them ... and I bet they are the kind of parents who don't want to be away from their kids very often.

Easy + Fun = Super
I happened to meet the author at a conference in Chicago recently, and what a great guy! His humor and smarts combine to be a sure-fire interesting book writer. So, I read the book, and it ! is! filled with really easy, fun ideas, tips, and tricks for staying involved with your kids when you're away. Nobody is saying it takes the place of being at home with them, but sometimes you just have to travel, and this makes it fun for the kids to keep in touch, as well as giving great ideas for what to before and after. This book is really interesting, and so is the author, Dan. I really enjoyed the fresh ideas in this book. Thanks, Robins Lane Press!

The Butterflies of North America: A Natural History and Field Guide
Published in Paperback by Stanford Univ Pr (T) (May, 1992)
Author: James A. Scott
Average review score:

Encyclopedic Natural History. Field Guide?
This book is a superb natural history. The author has obtained information from studies in scientific journals and from experts in the field. He consulted 700 sources for information on how butterflies overwinter. There is a wealth of detail. For the Spring Azure alone, he describes four subspecies and six forms, giving appearance, range, and flight periods of each. 56 of its host plants are listed, the most common ones marked with an asterisk. There are 10 photographs of the forms. Host plants for all butterflies are listed in alphabetical order in the index with the species numbers on the same line.

There are better books for use as a field guide. This book is too big (8x10) to carry in a pocket or binoculars case. I would be afraid of damaging this large, relatively expensive book. The sheer number of photographs makes a quick tentative identification harder.

This is a book that any butterfly enthusiast should add to his library. However, he should start his library with one of the smaller guides, such as Butterflies Through Binoculars: The East, the Golden Guide, or one of the regional guides.

First Class - little more to say really
By far the best single volume covering the North American butterflies. I have only one reservation. I don't know if this is a cultural thing, but US guide books tend towards colour photos instead of drawings. For a foreigner (UK) who hasn't been brought up with the American fauna, it is nearly impossible to tell from a photo which marks on an insect's wing are characteristics of the species, and which are that-own-specific-individual-in-the-photo's unique birth marks, imperfections etc. The better of the European butterfly guide books, and most of the world's better bird books all use high quality generalized drawings/paintings.

Superb overall quality and an absolute must for anyone with the slightest serious interest.

By far the best one-volume guide to N.American Butterflies
Probably the most valuable feature of this book are its colour plates, which depict a huge amount of subspecies and variations. As the colour plates are made up of photographs and not drawings, the species have certain natural defects and thus make it easier to identify species caught in the wild. The text is also exceptional, pointing out minute differences between species and describing in great detail their natural behaviour. Another extremely useful feature is the maps, which point out the exact distribution of species throughout North America. This is a wonderful book and belongs in the library of any naturalist, scientist, or entomologist, both amateur and professional.

This Java Junkie gives it Thumbs Up
BUY THIS BOOK!
I got this book for Christmas and I havn't put it down in two weeks. It opened my eyes that there is more to the Philadelphia "coffee scene" than my corner deli... or that Starbucks a few blocks away.

The listings are great with swell icons denoting the individual services/offerings for each of the featured coffee houses. The historical facts and background stories gave me a new appreciation for having new places in mind when I head out for" a cup of joe."

My cousins will be attending colleges in the area next fall and I can't wait to get them some copies. What better way to orient yourself to a new city than exploring the unique "scenes" one by one... and being that they're 18, this is the perfect "Welcome Ta FFFilly" gift!

Given the chance, I'd like to buy Ms. Linden a well deserved cup of coffee..black. Great job!

Looks cool on my coffeetable!
A great little(compact) guide to all the cafes you should be drinking coffee at, including the almighty Wawa; and just looking at the pretty photos is enough to start me craving a cup.

Great local resource!
Philadelphia is a city of close-knit neighborhoods, and without this little guide, you might never know what you're missing just a few blocks away. Even better, the book is a treasure for the beautiful, beautiful photographs. Definitely recommended for the coffee hound in Philadelphia.

The Candle Cafe Cookbook: Over 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant
Published in Paperback by Clarkson N. Potter (22 July, 2003)
Authors: Joy Pierson, Bart Potenza, and Barbara Scott-Goodman
Average review score:

Excellent!
This cookbook is wonderful! The recipes are great and they are even easy enough for a pathetic cook like me! EXCELLENT!

All my wishes come true
Thank you to Joy and Bart for sharing your secrets with us! The Candle Cafe is always my first and last stop in New York, so I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to get a taste of heaven across the seas.

This cookbook is simple to use and the ingredients are easy to find. There is not a single dish I would skip. A wonderful variety and each one delicious (from soups to sandwiches to main dishes and sauces, and much more, ending with mouth-watering dessert). I can now invite my non-vegan friends without them looking the food skeptically. The food itself deserves 5 stars. The simplicity of the recipes another 5 stars. Even an amateur cook would be able to create a delicious meal.

I'll still be back to the Candle Cafe for the pecan chocolate chip cookies though. Maybe in your next book...

the only way to go...
Whenever I am in NYC I eat at this restaurant and thank goodness I can finally replicate the food at home. I've never met restauranteurs who take so much pride in their work, and the cookbook is a wonderful tool to continue their vegetarian mission with absolutely savory food to boot. I HIGHLY suggest this cookbook!

Castle of Otranto
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (February, 1963)
Authors: Horace Walpole, M. Mudrick, and W. Scott
Average review score:

The Broadview Edition of Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto
Prospective buyers and users should take note that the Customer Reviews posted on Amazon.com are erroneous. They pertain to previous
editions of Walpole's Gothic novel and do not apply to the Broadview edition. A unique feature of the Broadview edition is the inclusion of Walpole's drama, The Mysterious Mother, sometimes mentioned by literary historians as the first Gothic drama. Thus, the user has at his disposal two important prototypes of the Gothic novel. Appendices include excerpts from Burke's treatise on the sublime, Hurd's Letters on Chivalry and Romance, the Graveyard poets, Hervey's Meditations Among the Tombs, Walpole's correspondence, and the eccentric architectural splendors of Strawberry Hill, Walpole's Gothicized villa on the Thames. I am the edition's editor, Frederick S. Frank, another fact omitted from the Amazon.com descriptor.

Best edition available
Finally someone has provided us with a readable, absorbing, and correct edition of this novel. I've always found this a difficult work, but the introduction and notes are wonderful, reading the book as camp and as opera. The hundreds of errors in the Oxford University Press edition are finally corrected here, and the appendix (providing 75 years of responses to Walpole's romance) makes for hilarious reading. Without question the best available teaching text.

I found this book very good and a bit scary.
Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole I found that this book, was a very good book. It was so good that I felt that I was in the book. Throughout most of the book I was feeling cold shivers dancing up and down my spine, especially when Manfred chased Princess Isabella. The one part that I didn't like was when the son of the friar was wrongly accused of killing Conrad, and then threatened with execution. I also didn't like it when Matilda died.

Cellular Cleansing Made Easy

Author: Scott Ohlgren
Average review score:

I love, love, love this book!
I love, love, love this book! I could not put it down! It is so inspirational. Why? One: Scott writes in such a way that makes it simple for any lay person to understand complex nutritional concepts. Two: his passion and caring came through in every line. I really felt like he was talking directly to me and that he cared about me. The style of writing is personable and caring. And Three: it is humorous and entertaining!
Well, he has me hooked. I am starting his next"NACHO" cleanse on the first of this next month.
Sincerely, Tonia

Practical information in an entertaining format
I loved this book! I have read a number of other books designed to provide a guideline for healthier diet, lifestyle, etc. I usually feel my eyes glaze over within a few pages as I struggle to understand the jargon or medical terms used. Not with this book! Written in layperson's terms with a liberal dose of humor, it is not only easy to read, but easy to follow. It is a book that I have referred to frequently and recommended to family and friends. The best thing about it? If you actually do the cleanse, it works! I look forward to more from Scott Ohlgren.

A Book For Everyone
Scott Olgren has injected simplicity and common sense into doing a cleanse. I followed his guidelines for my personal cleanse and experienced a difference in my energy and quality of life. As a result, I have made some life-changing habits in my diet. I will do his program at each seasonal change. This book is my first recommendation to all of my colon hydrotherapy clients. Many have done Scott's cleanse and reported, over and over, that this was the first time they could complete a cleanse regime, not go hungry, and feel such a difference. The book's resource section and Scott's on-line chatroom enable us participants to get feed-back from each other for comparison and encouragement.

Cheap Seats
Published in Paperback by Lost Horse Pr (March, 1999)
Authors: Scott Poole and Scott R. Poole
Average review score:

cheap poems, cheap laughs, cheap women, great book
If you are the kind of person who sits in the balcony at movies, wonders what Charles Manson is up to, dreams of showering in a waterfall, hates their job or has friends who are crazier than you, well, this is the book for you.

These poems are funny and sad and hip in ways that you'll immediately recognize. They're also strangely beautiful. You won't look at the world quite the same way you used to when you finish this book.

Poole creates his own world: Tread lightly here, use courage
Scott Poole's mind is wired incorrectly. Something is wrong in this boy's head, and the result it all right with me. The poems in this book show us what the postmodern world can be. Half-literary, Half-media-insanity, Poole's universe is controlled like a dream. His hopes and fears are our own; his interpretations of these is entirely his. His language is highly visual, highly interactive. We see these poems and the worlds they disguise from our own history, from where he helps us to remember our childhood, loves and nightmares in which ponies in pink lace somehow can save us. Nature and nudity and hallucination abound in these poems. Lust has never been sillier nor more immediate. This is how the writer wants the world to function, and with good reason. Once you enter Poole's world, our own seems less than adequate, where imagination is only our own, in The Cheap Seats, it is a wild ride that we all share, crammed into the back seat of Poole's old convertible, as he drives toward the edge of a chasm. Trust him behind the wheel, this man knows how to drive.

Funny poems whose shadows add depth and emotional significan
Scott Poole is a funny poet for sure, but what strikes the reader are the shadows below the humor. The bite and the literal sadness. If one observes the world beyond TV, one is a philosopher of poets. If one is nimble-tongued and true to the heart's point-of-view, one is gifted to speak to us in a language we digest level by level as it settles through the skin and seduces our insides. That's a good thing, I think. Scott Poole is a poet with both these characteristics and his poems are literal and clumsy and real. I dare you to read one without laughing or realizing something new: "This silence is nothing but me./It drowns things too small to hear./It's a little car running out of gas/nowhere."
